The Modern style dates from the mid-1900s, leaving behind the ornate decor of the Victorian era.  In a kitchen context, this style is identified by crisp, straight lines giving a streamlined and unfussy look.  The units have slab doors, with either a matt or gloss finish, and many designs have integrated handles.
